Algorand Foundation Names William Herkelrath CEO to Push Institutional Growth

Leadership Change at Algorand Foundation

The Algorand Foundation has appointed William Herkelrath as chief executive officer, effective Aug. 31. He replaces Staci Warden, who led the organization for almost five years. The Delaware-based group said the move is part of a push to expand its institutional business and prepare its blockchain for future risks, particularly from quantum computing.

Herkelrath comes from K3 Labs, an AI automation platform he co-founded. Before that, he held leadership roles at Chainlink, a blockchain data provider, and Curv, a crypto custody firm. His background mixes data infrastructure, custody, and automation, which may fit Algorand’s focus on payments, tokenization, and digital identity. I think that mix matters because institutions tend to care about custody, compliance, and how data moves across systems. The foundation wants to sell Algorand not just as a fast chain but as a network that can handle regulated use cases.

Quantum Readiness as a Selling Point

Algorand has been talking about quantum resistance for years, well before most of the industry treated it as an urgent issue. The network now has post-quantum accounts live in production, according to the foundation. Those accounts use Falcon-1024, a lattice-based signature system. The v42 consensus upgrade included support for post-quantum signatures, the group said.

Quantum computers are not yet able to break major blockchains in practice. That threat may still be years away, and experts disagree on timing. But developers at Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin are researching quantum-resistant signatures and ways for users to migrate assets. Algorand is trying to turn early work into a differentiator. Herkelrath said Algorand built for a quantum-resilient world before many others saw the risk. He added that post-quantum accounts are running in production, not sitting on a roadmap. His comments suggest he will use that work to court institutions that want long-term security planning.

Board Changes and What Comes Next

The foundation also changed its board. Herkelrath and Alex Fowler, chief strategy officer at Nexus Laboratories, are joining. Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier are leaving. Board shifts are common after a CEO transition, but they can signal a new direction. For Algorand, the direction looks clear: more institutional outreach, more emphasis on post-quantum security, and a tighter link between the foundation and product strategy.

Algorand was founded by Silvio Micali, a cryptographer and MIT professor. Its proof-of-stake network is used for payments, asset tokenization, and digital identity. Competition remains heavy. Ethereum has the largest developer base, Solana is fast and growing, and Bitcoin remains the dominant store of value. Algorand’s challenge is not technology alone. It must convince banks, funds, and governments that its network is the right place to build. Herkelrath’s task is to turn technical preparation into adoption. That will take time, and results may be uneven. But the foundation is betting that quantum readiness and institutional focus can set it apart. The next year will show whether that bet gains traction.
