Vitalik Buterin Proposes Concepts to Accelerate Ethereum’s Data Availability

Vitalik Buterin, the cofounder of Ethereum, has recently proposed new ideas to expedite improvements in the network’s data availability (DA) bandwidth. These enhancements are a crucial component for the sustenance and expansion of Ethereum’s ecosystem.

At present, the Ethereum community, inclusive of Buterin himself, views the extant Ethereum upgrade process as excessively slow. Developers, commonly referred to as ‘builders’, who are engaged in creating Ethereum-based applications and tools, seek better clarity regarding the platform’s potential. They require a clear-cut, five-year roadmap to comprehend the network’s scalability and to plan for the long-term. Buterin’s post seeks to address this need.

The general consensus is that Ethereum’s base layer, commonly known as layer-1, is not scalable. And the only viable alternative is considered to be layer-2 (L2) solutions. Buterin, however, sees it differently. According to him, Ethereum does possess the ability to significantly expand its base layer through zkEVMs and Data Availability Sampling (DAS). With these advancements, Ethereum’s scalability could potentially increase between 100 to 1,000 times in a few years, thereby enhancing its accessibility and competitiveness.

Presently, the volume of data that Ethereum can handle, also known as its data availability bandwidth, falls short of the required mark. Rather than waiting for five years, Buterin suggests increasing the target bandwidth to one megabyte per second in the next one or two years. Upon achieving this milestone, he emphasizes the necessity for continual enhancements. Rollups, the layer-2 solutions that are reliant on Ethereum for security, stand to gain from Ethereum’s robust foundation.

As a result of these enhancements, Ethereum’s ecosystem is poised to grow stronger, enabling rollups to scale and deliver faster and more cost-effective services. Currently, some projects are bypassing Ethereum’s data availability layer in favor of alternate solutions, which could potentially render Ethereum less appealing as the go-to blockchain for developers.

Buterin cautions that Ethereum needs to grow rapidly to maintain its relevance. To overcome these challenges, he suggests integrating Data Availability Provider nodes that come with stricter specifications. These would enhance scalability without compromising on security.

While Ethereum doesn’t necessarily have to match the performance of newer projects, it cannot afford to lag behind either. Ultimately, faster updates and more assertive scaling goals could ensure Ethereum continues to hold its position as a front-runner in blockchain technology.
