Ripple CTO David Schwartz steps down, becomes CTO Emeritus

Ripple veteran transitions to advisory role

David Schwartz, the longtime chief technology officer at Ripple, has officially stepped down from his executive position this week. He’s updated his professional profiles to reflect his new title: CTO Emeritus. This move follows his October announcement about stepping back from day-to-day duties.

Schwartz has been with Ripple for over a decade, directing the technical development of their cross-border payment systems. He also managed the company’s global engineering organization and, perhaps more importantly, co-architected the XRP Ledger itself. That’s no small thing when you consider how central XRP is to Ripple’s operations.

From operations to boardroom

In his October statement, Schwartz mentioned wanting to spend more time with family and return to hobbies he’d set aside. “The time has come for me to step back from my day-to-day duties as Ripple CTO at the end of this year,” he said at the time. It seems that transition has now officially happened.

But he’s not leaving the company entirely. Schwartz will join Ripple’s board of directors, which suggests he’ll still have influence over strategic direction. He expressed gratitude to CEO Brad Garlinghouse and President Monica Long in his announcement, calling them “the very soul of Ripple itself.”

Engineering leadership changes

With Schwartz moving out of daily operations, Dennis Jarosch steps into a more prominent role. Jarosch, who serves as Senior Vice President of Engineering, will now lead the company’s technology organization. That’s a significant responsibility, given Ripple’s focus on payment systems and blockchain technology.

I think this transition makes sense from an organizational perspective. After more than ten years in a demanding executive role, shifting to board-level advisory work allows for continuity while freeing up time for other pursuits. Schwartz mentioned being asked to join the board by someone named Chris, though he didn’t specify which Chris that might be.

Continued XRP community involvement

What’s interesting is Schwartz’s commitment to the XRP community. He made a point of saying, “Be warned, I’m not going away from the XRP community. You haven’t seen the last of me.” That suggests he’ll remain active in technical discussions and community engagement around the XRP Ledger.

For a company that’s faced regulatory challenges and market volatility, maintaining continuity in technical leadership matters. The XRP Ledger is a key piece of Ripple’s infrastructure, and having its co-architect remain involved, even in a different capacity, provides some stability.

This transition feels like a natural evolution rather than a sudden departure. Schwartz gets to step back from operational pressures while still contributing to Ripple’s long-term vision. The company gets to bring fresh leadership to daily engineering management while retaining institutional knowledge at the board level.

It’s worth watching how this change affects Ripple’s technical direction in the coming months. Jarosch will have big shoes to fill, but with Schwartz remaining on the board, there should be continuity in strategic technical decisions.
