Bitcoin Founder Raises Concerns About Ethereum’s Impact on Adoption
Ray Yossouf, founder of the Built With Bitcoin Foundation, has voiced his opinion on how Ethereum presents a significant challenge to the widespread adoption of Bitcoin. Yossouf took to social media platform X to respond to a conversation regarding drivechains, sparked by a post shared by Pierre Rochard. The conversation involved Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin expressing disinterest in the concept of drivechains.
Drivechains and Ethereum’s Resistance
Drivechains, which allow the Bitcoin network to generate, remove, transmit, and accept BTC on secondary chains called sidechains, have faced resistance from Buterin. Yossouf used this disagreement as an opportunity to highlight his view that Ethereum poses a significant barrier to the growth of Bitcoin’s adoption. He also used the occasion to promote his application, civkit, which aims to establish a censorship-resistant and permissionless peer-to-peer (P2P) electronic market.
Yossouf stated, “At first, I saw utility we could copy but the negatives far outweigh any positives. #civkit will replicate what is needed on ultra sound honest money and leave the rest for the scammers.”
Buterin Responds, Blames Bitcoin’s Scaling Limitations
Buterin fired back at the allegations made against Ethereum hindering Bitcoin’s adoption. He argued that Bitcoin needs to address its scaling limitations and do more than just accept payments. Buterin emphasized that Ethereum offers more lessons compared to Bitcoin due to the latter’s slow transaction speed and scalability issues.
Ethereum’s Lessons and the Ordinals Protocol
When asked about the new Ordinals protocol, Buterin explained that his experience with Ethereum taught him the challenges of reaching consensus in social systems. He provided an analogy, stating that a small team could create Uber more efficiently than multiple committees could solve public transit.
Buterin also expressed his belief that Bitcoin maximalism is hindering progress, as BTC has its technical and cultural systems integrated, leading to convoluted politics. He stated, “Sometimes people in (BTC-land) say things that go way too extreme, crazy, and factually incorrect and falsifiable six months later, and I wasn’t really into being part of that.”
Misalignment in the BTC Space
During the conversation, Buterin acknowledged that miners no longer hold the power in Proof-of-Work blockchains, dispelling the misconception that they can make invalid blocks part of the canonical chain. However, his comments sparked controversy within the BTC community due to Bitcoin’s constrained transaction capacity.
As the debate between Bitcoin and Ethereum continues, it remains to be seen how these differing viewpoints will impact the future adoption of cryptocurrencies.
