Aave to Phase Out 75 Low-Utilization Reserve Assets Across Networks

Aave is making a significant cleanup. The lending protocol plans to remove 75 reserve assets that are not seeing enough use. The move will affect both its own network and six other chains.

Founder Stani Kulechov said the restructuring is about efficiency. Aave will stop supporting 50 reserve assets on its main network. Another 25 reserves will be dropped on Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos. All of these are considered low-utilization assets.

Why Aave Is Doing This

Aave expanded quickly across many blockchains in recent years. That meant supporting a large number of digital assets. But not all of them attracted real activity. Some reserves simply did not reach the transaction volume or user demand the platform expected. Management now wants to focus on the assets users actually care about.

The restructuring has a measurable size. According to Aave, roughly $98.1 million in reserve assets will be affected. Loan positions worth about $15.6 million are also part of the transition. The protocol says support will be phased out gradually. Transition plans are in place to reduce disruption for users.

Industry Pattern and Possible Effects

This is not unusual in DeFi. Protocols often remove assets with weak liquidity or low usage. It can lower maintenance costs and improve security. Aave’s decision fits that pattern.

Some analysts expect short-term liquidity shifts in the affected assets. That is common when a protocol signals less support. But over time, the move could help Aave run a more focused platform. It may also lower operational complexity.

Aave remains one of the largest DeFi lending protocols by total value locked. It offers borrowing and lending services across different networks. This restructuring is a way to keep the system manageable as the space evolves.

The exact timeline for removing each asset has not been fully detailed. Users with positions in affected reserves should watch for further notices from Aave. The protocol says it will communicate the steps clearly.

This is not investment advice.
