Cloudflare acquires AI data marketplace Human Native for creator monetization

Cloudflare expands into AI data marketplace space

Cloudflare announced on Thursday that it has acquired Human Native, a London-based AI data marketplace. The move represents Cloudflare’s push into the AI data infrastructure space, with a particular focus on helping content creators monetize their work in the generative AI economy.

I think this acquisition makes sense for Cloudflare, given their existing infrastructure business. They’ve been expanding beyond their core CDN services for a while now, and AI data marketplaces seem like a natural extension. The timing feels right too, with so much discussion happening around creator compensation in AI.

Focus on transparent data transactions

The acquisition will focus on developing tools that let AI developers discover, access, and purchase high-quality data through transparent channels. At the same time, it aims to help creators convert and monetize their content more effectively.

Cloudflare co-founder Matthew Prince put it this way: “Content creators deserve full control over their work, whether they want to write for humans or optimize for AI.” That’s an interesting distinction he’s making there – the idea that content might be created differently depending on its intended audience.

Human Native’s expertise will help build tools for fair pricing, transparent transaction channels, and enhanced content utility for AI purposes. Prince added that this approach promotes a sustainable open Internet model.

Human Native’s background and mission

Human Native started in 2024 with the goal of creating infrastructure for a fair AI economy. The company wanted to help developers responsibly source high-quality data while enabling rights holders to participate in the AI industry with confidence, clarity, and proper compensation.

The startup previously secured £2.8 million in seed funding from LocalGlobe and Mercuri. Their team includes veterans from DeepMind, Google, Figma, and Bloomberg – that’s some serious talent coming over to Cloudflare.

Dr. James Smith, co-founder of Human Native, explained their original mission: “We started Human Native with the goal of getting Generative AI out of its Napster era.” That’s a pretty bold statement, comparing current AI data practices to the early days of music piracy. He continued: “We believe that creators should have control, compensation, and credit when their work is used to power AI products.”

What this means for the industry

This acquisition comes at a time when questions about data sourcing and creator compensation in AI are becoming increasingly urgent. Many creators feel their work is being used without proper attribution or payment, and legal challenges around AI training data are mounting.

Cloudflare’s move suggests they see an opportunity to build infrastructure that addresses these concerns. They’re positioning themselves not just as a content delivery network, but as a facilitator of fair data transactions in the AI economy.

It’s worth noting that Human Native is still relatively young, having launched just this year. The acquisition price wasn’t disclosed, but given their seed funding and team pedigree, Cloudflare likely sees significant potential in their approach.

The integration of Human Native’s technology with Cloudflare’s existing infrastructure could create interesting possibilities. Cloudflare already handles massive amounts of web traffic and data – adding AI data marketplace capabilities on top of that could be powerful.

But we’ll have to wait and see how this actually plays out in practice. Acquisitions don’t always go smoothly, and building a fair data marketplace is easier said than done. Still, it’s an interesting development in the ongoing conversation about AI, data, and creator rights.
