Bitcoin Whitepaper Turns 18 as Asset Value Reaches $1.55 Trillion

Bitcoin’s nine-page whitepaper is 18 years old today. On October 31, 2008, a person using the name Satoshi Nakamoto posted Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System to a cryptography mailing list. The paper described a way for people to send money online without a bank approving or recording every payment. That simple idea now sits behind an asset valued at about $1.55 trillion.

A Nine-Page Idea Led to a Large Market

The proposal introduced a public transaction record, now called the blockchain, and proof of work. Miners spend computing power to check transactions and add blocks. Changing old records becomes hard, though not impossible in every theoretical case. Bitcoin launched on January 3, 2009, when Satoshi mined the first block. The software also set a 21 million BTC cap, a rule that was not written directly in the original paper.

Supply Is Nearly Mined, but Not Fully

Bitcoin’s release schedule has held since launch. The block reward began at 50 BTC and halves every 210,000 blocks, or roughly four years. After the April 2024 halving, miners receive 3.125 BTC per block. The network hit another mark on March 9, 2026, when the 20 millionth bitcoin was mined. More than 95% of the maximum supply is now in circulation. The rest will arrive slowly, with the full supply expected around 2140.

ETFs and Companies Changed Who Holds Bitcoin

The January 2024 launch of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs gave traditional investors another route. They can get exposure through brokerage accounts instead of buying BTC directly, using crypto exchanges, or managing private keys. As of October 31, 2026, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs held about 1.28 million BTC, or around 6.36% of circulating supply. Their net assets reached $102.97 billion, and cumulative net inflows passed $57 billion. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust led with about $66.312 billion in assets.

Companies added a second path. Strategy held 848,517 BTC as of October 31, 2026, more than 4% of the maximum supply. It built the position through repeated purchases and capital raises. The U.S. government also moved to hold seized coins. In March 2025, an executive order set up a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, first funded with BTC taken through criminal and civil cases.

From Less Than a Cent to a Six-Figure High

Bitcoin’s price history is just as wide. Its first published dollar rate appeared in October 2009 at about $0.000764. It crossed $1,000 in 2013 and neared $20,000 in December 2017. It reached around $69,000 in November 2021 and set a record near $73,798 in March 2024. The rally continued into 2025, with an intraday high of $126,223 on October 6. The market then reversed. Bitcoin fell to about $58,586 on June 30, 2026, before recovering to around $77,200 by October 31. I think the lesson is not that the price only goes up. It is that a small proposal can become a market large enough for funds, companies, and governments to take part.
