225M XRP Backs $151.8M Maple Loans as December Repayments Near

Three loans, two December deadlines

Maple Finance has about 225 million XRP backing $151.8 million in stablecoin loans. The collateral is worth about $281 million at reported valuations. Two repayment dates fall in December, with a third set for January 2027. The positions appear on Maple’s syrupUSDC and syrupUSDT transparency dashboards.

How the collateral is split

The syrupUSDC side uses 142.77 million XRP and backs about $96.61 million in USDC loans. The syrupUSDT side uses 82.31 million XRP and backs roughly $55.19 million in USDT borrowing. Combined nominal principal is about $151.8 million. At reported values, the loans were 179% to 189% collateralized, so borrowers pledged more XRP value than they borrowed.

The setup is unusual. Maple’s loans originate from Ethereum-based liquidity pools, while the XRP collateral stays in native custody on the XRP Ledger. That differs from the proposed XRPL Lending Protocol, which is built around onchain credit infrastructure and offchain underwriting rather than automatic collateral sales.

December does not mean automatic selling

A repayment deadline does not mean millions of XRP will hit the market. Borrowers can repay and release collateral, refinance, or negotiate new terms that keep XRP pledged. That matters because collateral can remain committed for months instead of moving briefly between wallets for settlement. Ripple has been exploring a similar institutional credit model, and RippleX has described XRP collateral as a possible use case for institutional lending.

Still, refinancing is not assured. If XRP prices fall enough to breach contractual requirements, borrowers may need to add collateral or cut debt. Under Maple’s process, an unresolved margin call can lead to collateral liquidation, which could turn pledged XRP into market sales. There is no confirmed sign that these three positions face liquidation right now.

What it means for XRPL DeFi data

The size of the Maple arrangement also affects how XRP Ledger DeFi activity is counted. DefiLlama attributed about $281 million of XRPL DeFi value to Maple, compared with roughly $318 million across the network. That is around 88% of the reported total at the time, even though the financing originated on Ethereum. Other projects are testing related models. Flare has introduced XRP-backed borrowing using RLUSD, and more than 145 million FXRP had been minted through its network by late September. Ripple and Clearpool are also developing credit infrastructure.
