Ethereum Glamsterdam Upgrade Set for Sepolia Testnet on October 6

Sepolia activation details

Ethereum’s Glamsterdam update is set to go live on the Sepolia testnet on October 6. The Ethereum Foundation schedule puts activation at 16:53 Turkish time. That maps to epoch 353,024 and slot 11,296,768.

Validators on Sepolia will need to update both execution and consensus layer software before that slot. If they run older versions, they may miss participation or fail to follow the new rules. The exact software versions are listed in the foundation’s release notes, so node operators should check those before the deadline.

Glamsterdam is not a single-layer change. It combines the Amsterdam work on the execution layer with the Gloas update on the consensus layer. The name reflects both parts, and the package is meant to move through testnets before any mainnet date is considered.

What changes with ePBS

One feature getting attention is ePBS, or enshrined proposer-builder separation. In simple terms, it separates the validator that proposes a block from the entity that prepares the block at the protocol level. Today, much of that block-building work happens outside the protocol, with relays and builders playing a large role. ePBS would bring some of that structure into Ethereum itself.

The goal is not to remove builders. It is to make block production more reliable and easier to reason about. If a builder fails to deliver, the protocol can handle the slot without relying on the same off-protocol assumptions. That could reduce some operational risks for validators, though the design still needs testing.

Block-level access lists

Another item in Glamsterdam is block-level access lists. These lists would state in advance which parts of Ethereum’s state a block’s transactions will touch. Supporters say this can help clients process transactions in parallel and may improve mainnet capacity later on.

The idea is still early. Access lists could add complexity for developers and node operators, and the benefits depend on how clients implement them. The Sepolia run should give researchers real data on performance and edge cases.

What ETH holders should know

The October 6 update only covers Sepolia. It is a testnet, so no mainnet funds or $ETH balances are affected. Holders do not need to do anything. The mainnet activation date has not been confirmed. That schedule will be set after Sepolia results are reviewed, and likely after other testnets run similar upgrades.

For now, the people who need to act are Sepolia validator operators. They should upgrade their software, watch the epoch and slot, and monitor client team announcements. Everyone else can treat this as a checkpoint, not a mainnet event.

This is not investment advice.
