Google’s new AI feature connects your apps
Google has started testing something called Gemini Personal Intelligence. It’s a beta feature that’s available right now for Gemini Advanced users in the United States. If you’re a Google One AI Premium subscriber, you should have access to it.
The basic idea is pretty straightforward. The system looks at information from your Gmail, Photos, YouTube history, and Search activity. Then it tries to connect the dots between these different services. I think the goal is to give you responses that feel more personal, more tailored to how you actually use Google’s ecosystem.
How it works differently
What makes this interesting, perhaps, is how it approaches things differently from before. Previous versions of Gemini could access individual apps. You could ask about your emails, or about your photos. But this new feature can reason across multiple services at the same time.
Let me give you an example. Maybe you’re planning a trip. The system could look at your flight confirmation in Gmail, your hotel searches, and your YouTube travel videos all together. Then it could offer suggestions that actually make sense for your specific situation.
Google’s strategic direction
This feels like Google playing to its strengths. Other companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are focused on building powerful models. That’s their main game. But Google has something different – it has all these services that people actually use every day.
Gmail, YouTube, Search, Photos – these aren’t just apps. They’re where people spend time. They’re where people store memories, communicate, and find information. Google seems to be betting that context matters just as much as raw model power.
Trust is part of this equation too. People already trust Google with their emails and photos. The company probably thinks users will be more comfortable with AI that works within that existing relationship, rather than something completely new and separate.
Current availability and future plans
Right now, it’s limited. Beta for US users with Gemini Advanced. But Google says wider access is coming soon. The feature runs on Gemini 3, which is Google’s latest model.
There are questions, of course. Privacy comes to mind immediately. How much data is being shared between services? What controls will users have? These are the kinds of things people will want to know before they dive in.
But the direction seems clear. Google wants its AI to feel less like a separate tool and more like something woven into the services you already use. Whether that approach works better than just having a super-powerful standalone model – well, that’s what we’ll find out over the coming months.
