Crypto Payments Launched in Thailand for Tourists

Thailand is getting ready to start a new program that will let foreign tourists use cryptocurrency to pay for things during their visits. The government is planning to launch this special system called TouristDigiPay in late 2025.

The way it will work is straightforward. Tourists can exchange their crypto coins for Thai baht (the local currency of Thailand). However, they won’t be able to pay shops directly with crypto. Instead, the system will convert every cryptocurrency to regular money first, so merchants receive normal Thai baht payments.

This move comes as Thailand faces some tourism challenges. The country saw fewer visitors in early 2025 compared to the previous year, especially from China and other Asian countries. Many tourists are choosing other destinations like Japan or Vietnam because they’re becoming more affordable.

The Thai government hopes this crypto payment option will attract tech-savvy travelers and help revive the tourism industry. They’re working with several government departments to make sure the system is safe and follows anti-money laundering rules.

Other countries are also trying similar approaches. The small nation of Bhutan and even space tourism companies are starting to accept cryptocurrency payments from customers.
