How to find IP Address on Windows with Ease

how to find ip address on windows

A protocol is a set of rules which is used to be followed by everyone. So the internet protocols are important and are required because there are multiple vendors, ISP (Internet Service Provider) are there on the Internet. Everyone can follow their own rules, this would restrict the user and would force one to learn specific to every ISP and vendors. Also, there are communications that include multiple ISP and vendors so, if there is no standard rule to follow by everyone, then no ISP or no vendor can communicate with each other. In this article, we’ll elaborate how you can find IP Address on Windows.

This would restrict communication between each other. Suppose an ISP called X sends a file to you where X is not there as an ISP. Then if they have their own rules, no other ISP would be able to communicate. Only X users would be able to communicate with each other. This would lead to a gap in communication between network devices and restrict users to communicate. Thus, a standard set of rules is formed which are being followed by everyone and are known as Internet Protocols.

How to Find  IP address on Windows?

To find an IP address on Windows, these are the required steps that you have to luster on~

How to Find IP Address on Windows 10:

  • Go to the Control Panel by pressing the Windows key along with the X key the same as Windows 8.
  • Find the Change Adapter Settings option. To reach that, select option Find or write Network. Sharing Center on control panel search bar and press enter Change adapter settings option will arrive.
  • Click on the Ethernet option and then reach Status. After that, you will get details. Clicking on it, you will find your IP address details.

Alternate Way:

  • Go to the Network icon, which is looking like a computer icon. Now click on network settings.
  • Change Adapter options. Go to search, and you will get to see the Change adapter options. By Clicking on that, you will click on the Ethernet option. Go to status and click on the Details option and voila! you found your Computer’s IP address details

How to Find IP Address on Windows 8:

  •  Go to the Control Panel by tapping on the Windows key along with X, then you will find the control panel.
  •  Find the Change Adapter Settings option. Find Network and Sharing Center on control panel search bar and press enter to Change Adapter Settings option will arrive.
  • Click on the Ethernet option, then go to Status, and then you will find details. Click on it, you will find your desired IP address.

  • Find the Change Adapter Settings option. To reach that option find or write Network and Sharing Center on Control Panel search bar and press Enter. You will find there the Change Adapter Settings option.
  • Check the Ethernet details. After clicking on change adapter settings, you will get Local Area Connection option. Press double click on that then click on the properties. Now you will get to see two Internet Protocol versions i.e., V4 and v6. Double click on the required version for details.

Verifying an IP address in windows:

Verifying your IP address is equally important. So for that, all you have to do is following some steps such as~

Now, you can have the verified details of the IP address in your windows.

You may wonder what are these IP version 4 and version 6 are? You will know them below~

  1. IP version 4: IPV4 is Internet protocol version 4 was the IP’s first version. It was started in ARPANET, which is now renowned as IP version 4. Globally, this has been used for the purpose of identifying on a network by using an address. This has an address length of 32 bit, So it doesn’t need high memory and easy to remember the addresses. IPV4 supports manual and DHCP address configuration and representation of the address in decimal. A broadcast message transmission scheme and offers video conferences.
  2. IP version 6: IPV6 is the Internet protocol’s latest version. Taskforce started it. This version is initiated to work with more internet addresses. This Ip version has an address length of 128 bit and address space of 3.4*1038. It has an inbuilt security application named IPSEC. It represents addresses in hexadecimal. This helps hierarchical addressing and best for mobile networks. IPv6 Supports Quality of service.

Logical and physical address mapping is crucial to know when an IP address is being discussed.

Address Resolution Protocol(ARP):

It is a protocol that helps a system knowing the physical memory of another network address. It’s a layer mapping process. Knowing the IP address is not all; it requires a physical address of the destination. That is why ARP is required.

Logical and physical address mapping(ARP):

A router or host sends an IP datagram to a receiver that is another router or host. That receiver has its logical address(IP). If the sender is a router, then that IP will be found in a routing table, and if that is host, that IP will be found in DNS. To pass through the physical network, encapsulating the IP datagram into a frame is necessary.

So by that, you have understood that the receiver’s IP address has to be known to the sender for sending ARP query packet, which includes both the sender’s physical and logical addresses and receiver’s logical address(IP). Broadcasting over the network is necessary as the receiver’s physical address is not known to the sender.

The sender sends the ARP query packet to the network where many other routers are present as well but that ARP query packet only is recognized and received by the receiver who is intended. Then that receiver sends an Arp response packet to the sender. And inside that ARP response packet, the sender receives the receiver’s logical and physical address.

Now let’s take an example.

A sender or a system wants to deliver a package to another system having IP address 193.158.146.118, but because it doesn’t know the physical address of that system, the sender system is failing to send the packet to the receiver. So the sender system sends an ARP query packet to the receiver system. A system having IP address 193.158.146.118 receives the Packet, and in return, it sends an ARP response packet that has its a physical address. Now the sender system can send the package to the receiver system(193.158.146.118).

Reverse Logical and physical address mapping(RARP):

It’s a reverse ARP process where the client machine requests a logical address from the ISP provider servers via a local area network. When the machine roots, it forgets it’s logical address as it doesn’t store any IP address but not the physical address as it is inbuilt in the hardware that’s when a reverse ARP process is required. By RARP, client machine can know it’s logical address with the help of its physical address.

A RARP server stores all the physical addresses along with their IP addresses when ISP provided IP address for the first time. When the client computer wants to know it’s IP address, then they send a RARP request to the network for the RARP server. This request packet is sent to all the participants on that network but that packet can only be received by a RARP server. These servers are also more than one on the network so whichever server receives the packet can only response. It sends the response packet to the client machine, which has its IP address but that too via network broadcast where numbers of machines are available but can’t receive the packet as that packet can only be received whose physical address will be matched who are intended to be. So by RARP, the client machine gets their IP address in this way.

These ARP and RARP are the most important when IP addresses are a concern because this exhibits the knowledge about why IP address is required and how to know when your Computer unable to fetch the details of it’ IP address.

Change an IP address on your Computer

If you’ve got a dynamic IP with your ISP (call them to check), you can reset your router to get a new global IP. If you want to change your local IP, that’s something you do within your router’s settings.

In this article, we have highlighted the process to locate a specific IP as per the users’ requests. Hopefully, this content will help you to know the details about IP and its applications.
