Blockchain In Satellite Technology: The Cudos x Sfera Partnership

When blockchain technology is mentioned, what comes to mind? You probably think of crypto-tokens, NFTs, DAOs, and the likes. Even though you are on the right track, that would be a minimal scope of the applicabilities of blockchain technology. Blockchains offer an almost limitless range of uses across various fields.

Due to its decentralized and automated nature, blockchain is arguably best suited to simplify the complexities of satellite data computations.

Sfera Technologies, a firm that develops conceptually new ways to improve access to space data, recently announced its partnership with Cudos. Cudos is a layer-1 blockchain and layer-2 community-governed compute network designed to ensure decentralized, permissionless access to high-performance computing at scale.

A Strategic Partnership for The Future of Satellite Technology

Sfera Technologies is set to partner with Cudos to bring computation support to Ephemeris, Sfera’s decentralized space data infrastructure. The partnership aims to simplify complexities and significantly lower costs in the space industry.

Ephemeris is a multichain protocol by Sfera Technologies built to provide integrated satellite data delivery and process management systems on the blockchain. Sfera Technologies has announced plans to operate its satellite ground station network on Ephemeris. The platform, in conjunction with Cudos, will provide smart contracts and oracles. This alliance between Ephemeris and Cudos is set to improve Earth Observation (EO) by replacing existing paperwork used in providing ground segment services. Ephemeris will enable the ground station network to access an array of storage, computation, and dissemination services, creating the first decentralized satellite data ecosystem.

The need to adopt this technology in space exploration and earth observation cannot be overemphasized. The number of EO satellites in orbit has been steadily increasing, and so has the number of consumers of EO data across multiple economic sectors. However, with the current network models (built around only a handful of nodes on centralized network architectures), hyper-scale cloud service providers will find it difficult to store, process, and deliver on a larger scale.

More About Sfera Technologies

Sfera Technologies is a visionary NewSpace company. Operating with the belief that the space era is still in its infancy, Sfera Technologies is taking a different approach to space issues — focusing on designing and implementing standardized, efficient, organically growing infrastructures. The company has previously launched a GSaaS platform called HomePort. It is a virtual ground segment infrastructure. Focused on streamlined downlink and data capabilities for LEO, HomePort reduces space mission expenses, improves monetization of ground stations, and allows users to retain their control over critical assets and data.

An Overview of Cudos

Cudos is powering the metaverse bringing together DeFi, NFTs, and gaming experiences to realize the vision of a decentralized Web 3.0, enabling all users to benefit from the growth of the network. It’s an interoperable, open platform launchpad that will provide the infrastructure required to meet the 1000x higher computing needs to create fully immersive, gamified digital realities. Cudos is a Layer 1 blockchain and Layer 2 community-governed compute network designed to ensure decentralized, permissionless access to high-performance computing at scale.

The announcement of this partnership coincides with the Cudos mainnet launch scheduled for February 2022. Cudos had a highly successful testnet, which attracted over 20,000 developers. The Cudos Ecosystem also witnessed significant partnerships in 2021. In November, the network announced a massive collaboration with Tingo Holdings International to tackle poverty in Africa. In December, this was followed by an alliance with play-to-earn platform Cornucopias to build dynamic NFTs.

Conclusion

Blockchain technology has come to solve the numerous challenges of centralized space exploration. The partnership between Sfera Technologies and CUDOS is a step in the right direction to usher in this fully decentralized satellite technology vision. This will further simplify the processes, scale the results and make the data available to more people.
